Gerd and Oral Health : What You Need to Know

Gerd and Oral Health : What You Need to Know

Posted September 20, 2025

Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD) is a common digestive disorder that affects millions of people worldwide. While most people associate GERD with heartburn and indigestion , many are unaware of its significant impact on oral health.

Here we will explore what GERD is, how it affects your mouth and what you can do to protect your teeth and gums.

WHAT IS GRED ANXIETY?

WHAT IS GERD ?

GERD occurs when stomach acid frequently flows back into the esophagus – the tube that connects your mouth to your stomach. This backwash ( acid reflux ) can irritate the lining of your esophagus and causes symptoms such as :

  • • Regurgitation of food or sour liquid
  • • Heartburn or chest pain
  • • Difficulty swallowing
  • • Chronic cough or sore throat

But acid reflux does not stop at the esophagus – it can reach all the way to your mouth, and that’s where your oral health becomes vulnerable.

HOW GERD AFFECTS ORAL HEALTH ?

1. Tooth Erosion

Stomach acids are highly corrosive. When they reach the mouth , they can start to erode tooth enamel – the hard , protective outer layer of your teeth. Enamel erosion is irreversible and can lead to :

  • • Increased tooth sensitivity
  • • Yellowing of teeth
  • • Higher risk of cavities
  • • Chipping and cracking
2. Dry Mouth (Xerostomia)

GERD and some medications used to treat it ( like proton pump inhibitors) can reduce saliva production. Saliva plays a crucial role in neutralizing acids, washing away food particles, and preventing bacterial overgrowth. A dry mouth can lead to:

  • • Bad breath
  • • Gum disease
  • • Tooth decay
3. Gum Inflammation and Disease

Chronic acid exposure may irritate the soft tissues in the mouth, contributing to gum inflammation. Over time this can increase the risk of gingivitis and periodontitis.

4. Burning Mouth and Sour taste

Some people with GERD experience a burning sensation in the mouth or a persistent sour or bitter taste , which can affect eating habits and overall comfort.

WARNING SIGNS TO WATCH FOR

If you have GERD , watch for signs of oral health issues, including:

  • • Unexplained bad breath
  • • Sensitivity to hot, cold or sweet foods
  • • Rough edges on teeth
  • • A metallic or sour taste in the mouth
  • • Receding gums or loose teeth

HOW TO PROTECT YOUR ORAL HEALTH IF YOU HAVE GERD

1. Manage GERD symptoms
  • • Eat smaller, more frequent meals
  • • Avoid trigger foods ( spicy,acidic,fatty or caffeinated)
  • • Stay upright for at least 2-3 hours after eating
  • • Take GERD medications as prescribed
2. Practice excellent oral hygiene
  • • Brush twice daily with fluoride toothpaste
  • • Use a soft bristled tooth brush to avoid enamel wear
  • • Floss daily
  • • Rinse with a fluoride mouth wash
3. Wait before brushing

If you have had an acid reflux episode, wait atleast 30 minutes before brushing your teeth . Brushing immediately can spread acid and increase enamel erosion. Instead rinse your mouth with water or a baking soda solution ( 1 tsp of baking soda in a glass of water ) to neutralize the acid.

4. Stay hydrated

Drinking water throughout the day helps wash away acids and bacteria, and promotes saliva production.

5. Regular dental visits

Inform your dentist if you have GERD .Regular checkups can help detect early signs of erosion or other oral problems
